BioShock 2Developers Take Two have revealed that they are still ‘evaluating the optimal release window’ for all their big releases next year, with the likes of BioShock 2, Mafia 2, Red Dead Redemption and Max Payne 3. A new update for Champions Online called ‘Bloodmoon’ will be made available in October, its set to revolve around a Halloween style theme with Werewolves and zombie featuring. SEGA say they are fine with the recent deal by Disney to buy Marvel as all current licenses running will be honoured by Disney. And finally Developers CCP have confirmed that Eve Online will have a new free expansion pack called ‘Dominion’, which will be out this winter.

DiRT 2SONY have confirmed that the new PS3 Slim exists and that it will available to buy in the first week of September. The new remodelled PSP Go price has been revealed, costing £224.99 in the UK. Developers Lionhead have announced that there will be a Fable III, which is expected to be out late next year. There is a new Total War game coming out next year which will be centred around the French leader Napoleon and all of his famous battles. You will be able to try out the new Colin McRae game: DiRT 2 as the demo is available to this week. And it has been unveiled that EVE online developers CCP are working on a new first person shooter, titled DUST 514, which will be set in space.

Crafting adds repeatable content to MMOs

Having looked extensively at content in previous posts, and how we want it to be personal and persistent, there’s one area where content can be repeatable without players getting frustrated, but it isn’t being used to its full potential: crafting.

Crafting is an idea that is arguable the only original gameplay idea to have appeared in MMOs over single player RPGs (discuss!). You gather ingredients, learn skills and craft items. Then you repeat. In honesty, I suspect that the repeatable nature was the driving force behind the inclusion of the mechanic. It allows developers to give players something to do that isn’t eating up quest content, that we’re happy to repeat, and doesn’t require new areas to be created. It’s an ideal way of eating up game time. (more…)

Issue 11 of MMOZine, our free MMORPG magazine, is out for download today and we’ve packed it with exclusives. With patch 3.1 just out, we’ve got a review of World of Warcraft: Secrets of Ulduar, as well as an interview with World of Warcraft’s lead designer about what’s planned for the future.
